Update checker

Coming soon

Update your theme. Keep your custom code.

The Update checker will merge each new Kazooify release with the theme you already have, keep your changes, and show you anything that clashes so you decide. It's planned for every plan, and nothing goes live until you publish.

How it will work

  1. Export your theme

In Shopify, download your current theme as a zip. Edits made in the theme editor and in code are both in it.

  2. Upload it to your Kazooify account

The Update checker will work out which Kazooify version your theme started from and compare it with the latest release.

  3. Get a merged update

Your custom code will be kept and any clashes shown side by side, to resolve in your browser. Then download the merged zip and a clash report.

What it keeps

Settings and templates

Colours, fonts, section order and content carry over, with settings moved across safely if the new version renames anything.

Your custom files

Custom CSS, custom sections and snippets in the custom areas are kept exactly as they are.

Your code edits

Changes you or your developer made to theme files are kept wherever the new version did not touch the same lines.

What's a clash?

If you edited part of a file that the new version also changed, that's a clash. You'll see your version and the new version side by side in your browser, and choose yours, the new one, or a mix. You can also download the merged zip with a clash report to share with your developer.

Nothing goes live until you publish

The merged theme is a separate zip you upload to Shopify as a new, unpublished theme. Preview it, then publish when you're happy. Your current theme stays untouched.

Included on every plan

Store, Studio and Agency all include the Update checker. For agencies with many client stores, each with its own tweaks, it means reviewing only the clashes instead of redoing work by hand.

Questions

Is the Update checker available yet?

Not yet. It's coming soon, and no themes have been released yet either. We'll announce it on the changelog when it's ready.

What does it keep?

Your theme settings and templates, your sections and content, any custom files (for example custom CSS, custom sections and snippets), and code you or your developer changed, wherever the new version did not change the same lines.

What is a clash?

A clash is when you edited part of a file that the new version also changed. Instead of guessing, the Update checker will show both versions side by side so you can pick yours, the new one, or combine them. Everything else merges on its own.

Will anything change on my live store?

No. The result is a separate zip for you to upload as a new, unpublished theme. Nothing goes live until you preview it and publish it yourself, and your current theme stays as it is.

Which plans include it?

All of them: Store, Studio and Agency, at no extra cost, for stores activated on an active subscription.

Is it useful for agencies?

Very. If you look after many client stores, each with its own tweaks, you can run each store through the Update checker and review only the clashes instead of redoing customisations by hand.

How is this different from the Updater app?

The Update checker works with theme zips you export and upload, so it needs no app install. A Shopify app that does the export and upload for you is planned for later.
